I am writing to you to stand behind the organization Heart’s Home. My name is E.T., I am 27 years old, live in Los Angeles California and own my own business. I was a volunteer with Heart’s Home at the Fazenda do Natal in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil from January 2011 to July 2012. I had seen a flyer for Heart’s Home in 2008 at a conference and it appealed to me. I keep the flyer and finished college. I had forgotten all about it until I was about to graduate from DePaul University with my degree in sociology. I wanted to join Heart’s Home and really learn how to love, as they say it’s the kindergarten of love. I backpacked through Europe the summer before I left. My time in Brazil was the most difficult, most beautiful time of my life. I still think of it every single day. I learned a new way to see life and my heart grew immensely. I have a whole book about my experience and talk about it all the time.

While I was there, I had a blog that I wrote about everything I saw and experienced. When I moved to New York City afterward, I continued the blog and wrote about continuing my mission in my regular life. I got a job in Brooklyn and made new friends. I lived with the group of Heart’s Home in Brooklyn for 8 months before moving into my own apartment with friends. I would go to my job during the week and on Sundays I would join the others to visit our friends in the projects. I eventually decided to move to Los Angeles so that I could be closer to my family and this is when my blog turned into a full time business. I design wedding invitations, brand companies, make my own art. My company is called Be A Heart (they told me my whole job in Brazil was to be a heart, nothing but a heart). I try to do my work with this idea in mind and always act out of my heart. Just today I was published in ELLE Magazine for a wedding that I did! And there it is in writing, Be A Heart.

Just as we did in my time in Brazil, I love to invite friends for dinner parties or create community in other ways. My friends in Los Angeles need the compassion I learned in Heart’s Home just as much as my friends in the slums of Brazil.

Please contact me if you have any more questions for me or want me to expand on anything.

Sincerely,
