It is my pleasure to write this letter in support of Heart’s Home in New York City. Although my wife and I are not the nearly fluent francophones we were in our days at the Sorbonne and the Ecole Normale Superieure de Jeunes Filles, we feel a deep connection to French culture and the intellectual and spiritual riches of the Catholic church in France. Heart’s Home brings that into our lives in a special way, with their outreach to the arts and their loving combining of their network with various artistic and spiritual networks here, and in Japan.
I was honored to serve on the committee that organized their benefit gala. All who attended were filled with joy. I took a photo of a retired bishop whose faced was so transformed by the joy of the event that it was besieged by 150 « like »s on Facebook.
Because of the influence of photographers like Henri Cartier Bresson, Doisneau and Ronis, I have taken up street photography in New York City. Fr. Paul Anel has been a great encouragement and is curating my first show through his connections with galleries in NYC. For this I am extremely grateful. He has shared his interest in cinema and art and helping the needy. And we are all impressed by Heart’s Home’s ability to bridge these worlds, and the worlds of France, Japan and the U.S. Wherever these people go they bring love, generosity and joy.
As far as I can tell, the quality of the people there are first rate. I note that they were written up by our newspaper of record, the New York Times, with a beautiful and sensitive photo essay.
Since the time, at least, of the Cluniac reforms, the French church has been the source of renewals of piety, encouragement of art and caring for the poor. In other words for carrying the flame of Christ into the darkness of the human heart, the darkness of the mind and the darkness of human separation. In my brief encounter with Heart’s Home, I have found them to be, in their small but significant way, worthy progeny of that tradition.
I note in passing that my wife, , is a partner in private equity fundraising at W. where you used to be an attorney. It’s a small world, and she also endorses Heart’s Home in NYC as strongly as I do.
Yours in Christ,
